The DIY website dilemma

A lot of recent press has been given to DIY (do it yourself) website platforms. Just last week I read an article in our local paper about how Intuit has partnered with Google to offer “free” websites to small businesses. This might be a great opportunity for the 50-percent of small businesses in Northeast Ohio without a web presence. BUT … most people don’t realize that these websites aren’t really as “do it yourself” as they claim to be.

How secure is YOUR Facebook profile? … Do you even know where to find your privacy settings? These are questions every current user should be asking, especially since Facebook likes to change the rules without telling anyone. I’m sure many of you just assume Facebook would take every precaution necessary to protect its users. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case at all. And when you throw 3rd-party apps into the mix … profile security goes right out the window.

Mastering social media

Think back a couple years… to a time without Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. Seems hard to imagine. How did we even survive back then?

I started thinking about that as it relates to my business and came to the realization that I am addicted to social media. There — I said it. But the fact of the matter is that we DID survive without social media… and a lot of our businesses were extremely successful. Why? Because we actually took time to communicate with our clients on a more personal level. We made phone calls, met for coffee, even sent personal notes… and that was how we knew what was going on in each other’s businesses.
